Update Feb 2025: We finally got the Permit last Dec. 2024 and have started clearing the park!! (see photos below) We now need to fundraise for construction expenses. We will also continue to apply for grants with the support of our elected officials. The project is to transform the idle and forested site into an artistic community park that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The existing trees and vegetation will be pruned, with some to be removed as recommended by our consultant NYS certified arborists. The park will continue to be fenced for security and maintenance, and will be open at designated days and hours during the non-winter seasons. Gazebos, picnic tables, and benches will be installed, with a central stage for occasional community events and performances. Community partnerships will be established for the park’s safety and upkeep, as well as the enhancement to the quality of life in the surroundings. The park will also honor the heroes, living and deceased, of the Covid pandemic, many of Filipino-American descent, since the site is within what was once the global epicenter. The Park project has been reviewed, approved, and endorsed by the Queens Community Board # 2 Parks, Environment and Recreation Committee, District 30 NYS Assemblymember Steven Raga, as well as neighboring groups and organizations. Councilmember Julie Won, Consulate General Senen Mangalile and the Woodside Neighborhood Association are very supportive. We aim to have a soft opening in 2025 , and will have bimonthly clearings every 1st and 3rd Saturday, next one is in March 1. Register at lecrowder@gmail.com.
